Indian students collaborate with U.S. students for studying smart city

Institute for Business Innovation from Haas School of Business sent a delegation of its students to Vishakhapatnam. The school is affiliated to University of California and the student’s delegation visited to join forces with the students from Indian institutions. This was part of the program for developing businesses, technology and engineering models for smart cities in India.

The studies were carried out by 33 students who worked on projects on education,energy, water and food, safety and security, housing and transportation and telecommunications.As part of their curriculum, the students from the U.S. school had taken up a semester of study on open innovation. This study wasfocussed on India where the Govt. of India is coming out with its mission for development of 100 smart cities.

In 2015, the students had visited GIFT city in Gujarat. U.S. PresidentBarak Obama and Indian Prime MinisterNarendraModihassigned a MoU for development of Ajmer, Allahabad and Visakhapatnam as smart cities.

Prof. Darwin of the Haas School said that the Union Minister for Urban Development Mr. M. Venkaiah Naidu had requested the University to prepare the framework for Visakhapatnam. The 6 projects by the students would be showcased at a programmein the second week in January. This programme would be attended by Andhra Pradesh CM Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Prof. Darwin said“Open innovation is a win-win situation for all the stakeholders,”.
Various institutes in India including IIT-Madras, IIT-Roorkee,IIIT-Bangalore, GITAM, NIT-Jaipur and Andhra University were participating in the ‘Open Innovation Challenge-Smart cities’ which was organized by the Andhra University and Garwood Centre. There were more than 200 students from these institutes which formed 38 teams. Andhra University VC G.S.N. Raju said that this collaboration will focus on developing the business models.

The Open-Innovation programmegave an opportunity to the students of the Andhra University to have a global exposure.This was an opportunity for the University students to compete with students from abroad.
