Adalaj Stepwell

AdalajniVav is a unique water buildingsituated in Adalaj village in Gujarat, which is around 18 km from Gandhinagar.

The well is popular among tourists for the carvings.

Queen Rudabai in 1499 got this vav constructed which also served as a transit point for caravans passing through this trade route.

The step-well or vav (Gujarati term) is a five level well and it features carvings of, Hindu Gods and Goddesses, animals, flowers, geometrical patterns and other ornamental designs. Adalaj step well is built in sand stone in Solanki architectural style. The floors are spacious to accommodate a large gathering. Such step wells were once integral to the semi-dry regions of Gujarat, as they supplied water for drinking, bathing and washing. These wells are the venues for rituals and festivals.

These types of stepwells were built between 5th and 19th centuries and out of over 120 wells, Adalaj step well is very popular. The place is well connected from both Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad and buses and taxis are easily available to commute to the vav.
